Comments on Me from MePeople like to ask me some questions I find amusing at times. They generally fall into two catagories, my personal life and where I am from. The first type are the questions like "How many children do you plan to have?" or "You are planning on having children, right?" I find these questions a bit odd since I do not have a boyfriend, let alone a husband in which to have children with, but some people need reasurance that I will try to populate the earth. It comes from this perseption of me as a mother. Nice, because it is part of my personality, but also a bit strange. The other types of questions are "What is your native tounge?" or "Are you a forigner?" or "Is English your second language?" or "What country are you from?" I find these questions amusing, because if you read my history you would know I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, have never really left the country, and only know english. Part of it is my name, part is my misspellings, and part mispronunciation, but still very funny. Now that I am living in Singapore, I still get some of the same questions, asking where I am from. It is not so strange to get those comments out here, becasue I am an outsider. What was really funny was that my department expected me to be an Indian male, and even had me listed as a MR. in the phone directory. Now they had a copy of my passport and a picture, but I guess with a bad photo-copy, some general misconceptions, and my name comming from India this was not so bad. Their is also a class of people who like to put me into a historical period. Craig says that when he reads Brothers Grimm Fairy tails, I am his image of the daughter of the peasants - "I am like the personification of sturdy greman peasant girl." Then his roommate Eddie throws in that I would be perfect in the time period of Dangerous Leisons - with a big wig, a white face, and those dresses. Comes from having a round face and being more then 6 feet tall I guess. My point here is that others perceptions of my are varied, and often not what I think of myself, and it tends to ammuse me to hear stories of me, stories I would not think to tell. |
